A local wholesaler just told me how much water lilies actually drink
I was picking up a wedding order yesterday and got talking to the owner about keeping blooms fresh. He mentioned that a single water lily stem can pull up over a quart of water in a day. I had no idea they were that thirsty. He said if you don't keep the vase topped off, they'll wilt in hours, not days. I've been treating them like regular flowers and wondering why they didn't last. Has anyone else had to adjust their care routine for specific flowers after learning something like this?

But your mom's flowers probably aren't water lilies, which are a totally different beast.

Learned this the hard way with my own wedding flowers. Now I keep a pitcher of water next to the vase and refill it twice a day.

Twice a day seems like a lot. They're just flowers, not a pet. My mom sticks hers in a vase and maybe adds water once and they're fine for a week.
