I know everyone says to get a new build for your first home, but I bought a 1970s fixer-upper in Tacoma and it was the right call.

Oh man, I feel that. My first place was a 1980s time capsule. I spent a whole weekend just pulling up orange shag carpet, only to find even uglier linoleum underneath. The charm is real, but so is the surprise wiring. Still, wouldn't trade it for some bland box.

Yeah, the ugly layers are part of the deal. I found old newspapers under my floor, which was kinda cool, like @taylorc40 said about the story. It makes fixing the weird stuff feel worth it in the end.

Wouldn't trade it for some bland box" really hits home. I used to think new builds were the goal, all clean and perfect. But finding those weird layers in an old house, even the ugly linoleum, gives it a story. That surprise wiring is a headache but it makes the place feel truly yours. You're right, the charm wins out every time.
