I thought family emergency funds were a waste until last month

Always figured keeping cash locked up for 'just in case' was dumb. My brother kept pushing me to save, but I ignored him. Then our water heater blew and flooded the basement. Fixing it cost way more than I had on hand. Had to borrow from my dad, and that felt awful. Now I'm building a fund and telling my friends to do the same. Never want to be caught short again with family stuff.

Yeah, calling them a waste is something I said for years. What worked for me was automating a small weekly transfer to a savings account.

So does having that automated transfer make the whole saving thing feel less awful now, like you're not just throwing money away?

That "throwing money away" feeling is real when I actually see my money. Automating it just means my bad spending decisions have to wait until after the savings come out. It feels less like waste when it's gone before I can think about it.
