My sauerkraut batch in the basement closet went nuclear last night
I was in my apartment in Tacoma and heard a loud pop, then found a jar had exploded, spraying brine and shredded cabbage all over the wall. I had to clean it up with a vinegar solution to stop the smell from setting in. Has anyone else had a jar blow from too much pressure building up?

Wait, so burping is for fermenting, not canning like @dianahayes said?

Saw a blog post about "burping" jars to prevent that.

What exactly are they saying to burp? I've heard of burping fermenting jars to let gas out, but also burping jars in the fridge when you first put hot leftovers in. The blog needs to be way more clear. If it's about canning, burping seems like a bad idea that could break the seal.
