Why I always stain fences at noon

I learned this from a veteran fence builder when I was starting out. He insisted that staining in direct sunlight prevents runs and sets the color better. Am I wrong to stick with this method?

My old boss swore by that noon staining rule too. I still follow it, but my own shaky hands mean I get more stain on my shoes than the wood half the time.

Seriously, shaky hands must make staining a real hassle. What starts the shaking for you, is it just nerves or something else? I see some people switch to wider brushes to avoid drips. Do you find oil-based stains worse for spills than water-based? Does the noon rule actually help with control or just the lighting? What else have you tried besides taping your shoes?

Tape your shoes, solves that spill problem every time.
