The gate hinge that broke at a dog park changed my install method

I was installing a new fence at the Oak Ridge dog park last month and on the third day the gate hinge snapped clean off. It was a cheap stamped steel hinge from a big box store. The park manager told me they had the same hinge break on two other gates in the past year. Now I only use heavy duty welded hinges on any gate that gets constant use like that. Has anyone else run into gates failing faster than the rest of the fence panels?

Broke a hinge on my own shed door last year trying to open it with a frozen latch. Now I just wait for the ice to melt instead of yanking on it.

I mean yeah, that whole "yanking on it" thing is a pretty good metaphor for how a lot of people handle stuff in general. So many of us just brute force our way through problems when a little patience would save us a ton of trouble later. It's like we're all wired to react instead of just pausing for a second. I see it at my local coffee shop when someone's phone isn't loading and they start mashing the screen over and over. Same energy, just wait for the app to catch up. It's something I've been trying to unlearn myself, honestly. Sometimes the smartest move is just doing nothing and letting things thaw out on their own.

Oh man, that frozen latch thing hits close to home. Last winter I had a similar deal with my truck tailgate. The handle froze solid and I gave it a good yank, snapped the whole plastic mechanism inside. Had to zip tie it shut for a week until the replacement came in. Now I just pour warm water over the latch and wait a minute.
