A client in Seattle told me pockets ruin a dress line, and I just don't agree.

We were fitting a linen shift dress in her studio last spring, and she pointed at the side seams saying, 'See? Any pocket bag adds bulk, it's a design flaw.' I think that's missing the point of real clothes for real life. Has anyone else found a clean way to add hidden pockets without changing the silhouette too much?

What kind of stuff is she expecting you to carry, a single key? My work pants have pockets that lay flat until you actually put something in them, and they don't look bulky at all. Isn't the whole point of a shift dress to be a simple, functional piece? How is it functional with no place to put your phone or wallet?

My last shift dress had pockets so small I couldn't even fit a tube of lip balm. I ended up sewing my own pockets into the lining, which took an entire Saturday afternoon. It's wild that a "simple" dress needs a whole DIY project just to hold your phone. Designers seem to forget that women actually need to carry things too.

Ever think maybe the point is to look sleek, not carry a whole purse worth of stuff? @smith.anna could just use a clutch.
