Just realized I was overthinking hoof wall sealer application for years

Tried applying it thin with a brush instead of slathering it on thick like the old-timers taught me, and the hoof held moisture way better through a wet Kentucky spring - has anyone else found that less is more with sealer?

that thin stuff will wash right off" - my friend Rachel swore by the thick coats too. She layered it on like cake frosting one spring and her mare's hoof got so hot and mushy underneath she had to soak it for a week to pull the rot out. Switched to light coats after that and never had a problem since.

Now hold on a minute. I've been doing this for over 30 years and I still slather it on with a putty knife, especially during wet seasons. That thin coat you're bragging about might let moisture in through microcracks you can't even see. Last spring we had three weeks of straight rain here in Ohio and the only hooves that stayed sound were the ones with a nice thick layer that I could feel with my thumb. You might get lucky this year but wait until you hit a real mud season, that thin stuff will wash right off.

You ever try mixing in a little pine tar with that thick layer?
