Overheard my neighbor call her grandma's casserole recipe 'a waste of good ingredients'

She said the recipe was too simple, just ground beef, corn, and a box of Jiffy mix. But that casserole got my family through a tough winter in '98 when money was tight. Who gets to decide what makes a recipe 'good' anyway?

But what if the neighbor just wants to cook better food? Maybe she's tired of that same old boxed mix and wants to learn new skills. @claire_hart53, I get the comfort thing, but a recipe can be both cheap and actually taste good if you try. That casserole sounds like it needs some onions or seasoning to make it worth the effort.

My mom made that exact same casserole for years. It was cheap, it filled us up, and it tasted like home. Your neighbor is missing the whole point of food. A good recipe is the one that feeds people and makes them feel okay when things are hard. That box of Jiffy mix did more important work than any fancy ingredient. I’m glad your family had it.

That's the real truth right there. Food is about way more than what's on the label.
