Saw a surprisingly smooth-running traction elevator in a 1970s building in Tacoma
The governor and selector tape were spotless, clearly maintained by someone who cared. Anyone know who's been working on the old Rainier Tower?

That elevator's a total death trap, trust me.

Yikes, that's scary to hear. I read a news piece last year about a bunch of elevators failing inspections in older buildings. Makes you wonder what gets missed.

Maintenance like that doesn't happen by accident. You need a crew that checks the governor rope weekly and cleans the tape reader contacts with the right solvent. The old Otis units in those buildings run forever if you keep the selector adjusted and the tension right. Find out who does the contract for the property manager.
