Cleaning out the garage and found my old Otis service manual from 1998

I was flipping through it and saw the recommended call-back time for a full traction machine overhaul was listed as 120 hours. That's three full weeks for one unit. My current company's standard for a similar job is 72 hours. I found it in a box under my old fishing gear. Makes you wonder how much the push for speed has changed the way we do the deep repair work.

Remember when a job was done right, not just fast? Now they want it in half the time and wonder why things break again so quick. Found the problem.

That 1998 manual probably had a whole section on hand-scraping bearings that nobody does anymore. The push for speed didn't just cut the hours, it changed the tools and the skills. We swapped out a week of fitting and filing for a day with a laser and a pre-made part. The job gets done, but the guy doing it now has a totally different bag of tricks, and some of the old fixes are just gone.
