Was totally wrong about those cheap solder fume extractors

I thought spending $30 on a no-name fume extractor off Amazon would be a waste compared to the $150 Hakko unit. After 6 months of daily use on through-hole boards and small SMD work, that cheap fan is still running strong. It even survived me knocking it off the bench twice last week. The carbon filter needs changing more often, sure, but replacement packs are like $8 for a 4-pack. Has anyone else found a budget tool that actually held up better than expected?

Used to be pretty snobby about this stuff actually. Thought you had to spend money to get something decent. But a buddy let me try his cheap setup a while back and man, it worked just fine. Changed my whole perspective on it. Now I grab the store brand most of the time and it does the job. No shame in saving a few bucks.

Read an article a while back about how most of the cheap stuff is made in the same factories as the expensive brands anyway. Just different labels on the same boxes...
