Remembering the first time I saw a board swap at a repair meet in Austin
It was about eight years ago at a small meetup in a library basement. A guy was fixing a laptop by just replacing the whole main board, which felt like cheating to me back then. Now, with parts so cheap and time so tight, I do it all the time to get things out the door faster. Does anyone else miss the old days of hunting for a single bad capacitor, or is it just me?

That swap method felt like cheating to me too at first. Now it's just the smart way to run a shop when time is money. Still miss the puzzle of a real component level fix though.

Read an article about how the swap method basically killed off a whole generation of repair techs who really knew how circuits work. Totally get what you mean, @diana_west27, about missing the puzzle. It's faster to just swap a board, but it feels less like fixing and more like parts changing. Makes me wonder if the next wave of gadgets will be impossible to even open up for a swap.
