That $300 switch I found in an abandoned bakery was absolutely alive
Honestly, I was doing a reno on this old bakery downtown that shut down like 5 years ago. Pulled open a panel behind the walk-in cooler and found a 200-amp disconnect switch just sitting there covered in flour dust. The thing tested perfectly on my multimeter, not a single fault. I cleaned it up and it's now sitting in my shop as a backup. Has anyone else ever scored something valuable from an abandoned building like that?

Used to think abandoned stuff was junk until I pulled a working breaker out of a condemned laundromat.

Buddy of mine pulled a near-perfect commercial oven thermostat out of a foreclosed pizzeria that had been sitting for years. The place was nasty, mold everywhere, but this one part was just chilling in a box on a shelf. He tested it, cleaned the contacts, and it works better than the OEM replacement he was about to order for his own shop. Said it saved him like a hundred bucks. Still gives him the creeps thinking about what else was in that building though.
