I was twisting wire nuts the same way for 10 years until a foreman in Tampa pointed it out
He watched me do a splice on a 12/3 run and said 'you're just spinning the nut, you need to spin the wires inside it.' I tried his way and the connection felt way more solid, like it actually pulled the wires together. How many of you actually twist the wires before putting the cap on versus just letting the nut do the work?

Used to just screw the nut on and call it good. Thought the twisting inside the cap was overkill. Then I had a connection fail on a light fixture that was a real pain to get back to. Started pre-twisting the wires with my linesmans before capping ever since. The difference in how tight and clean the splice feels is night and day.

Wait, you weren't pre-twisting for ten years?

Man, @phoenixb34, that hits close to home. I went way too long without doing it right myself. Makes a huge difference once you finally learn.
