Yeah I remember hearing about a different method where you twist the insulation first before pulling it off. Tried it once on some speaker wire and it just mangled the whole thing. Honestly those little tricks either work perfectly or turn into a total mess, no in between. Sounds like the pliers method is way more reliable.
