Saw a Northern Parula at the pond behind the Aldi off Highway 9 this morning

I always just walk past that little drainage pond on my way to grab groceries, but today I actually stopped to watch. This tiny blue-gray bird with yellow patches was hopping around the cattails, and I looked it up when I got home. Turns out it's a Northern Parula, and they usually stay high in the canopy, so spotting one at ground level felt like a lucky break. Has anyone else seen a bird in a weird spot that made you stop and check the guide?

Wait, you got a phone pic of it? No way, that's crazy lucky cause those little dudes are impossible to catch still. I've only ever seen them as little blips way up in the treetops.

You ever notice how a bird acting "weird" like that is almost always a sign it's either young and dumb or just really hungry? I'd put money on the foraging thing with the Parula. They're bug eaters, and that little pond probably had a hatch happening right at the cattail level. Might have just been a smart bird ignoring the treetops for a change cause the food was easier to grab down low. I've seen them do the same thing after a heavy rain when all the bugs get washed down.

...but was it actually foraging or did it seem lost? I always wonder if they're blown off course during migration or just taking a weird detour. Did it look healthy and alert, or kinda confused and puffed up?
