Rant: Heard a GC say seams on ceilings should be butted, not tapered, and it got me thinking.

Ran into a guy at a supply house who swore butted seams hold up better on vaulted ceilings, but tapered joints have saved me hours of sanding on 20 foot high jobs, so what's the real consensus here for high-traffic commercial spaces?

Nah, I gotta push back here. Honestly, butted seams on a vaulted ceiling sound like asking for trouble. Tapered joints take a little more prep but they save your arms and your back once you're up there on a 20 foot ladder trying to sand. In a commercial space with foot traffic and vibration, tapered joints have always held up fine for me. I'd rather spend the extra time taping and mudding right than fight with butted edges that can pop or crack later.
