Had to talk a client out of a drywall garden feature
They saw a picture online and wanted a drywall planter box for their patio. I explained how rain would soak right through and collapse it. We settled on a wooden frame with proper siding. Sometimes the craziest ideas come from too much time on Pinterest.

In my cousin's backyard in Florida, they tried a drywall border for a herb garden. Even with sealant, the humidity made the paper backing peel and mold grew within weeks. It wasn't just water damage, the damp drywall drew termites from the soil. Now, why would anyone risk bringing pests closer to their home for a Pinterest trend? Sometimes the hidden costs aren't just about rebuilding, but dealing with infestations. Makes you wonder what other 'easy' ideas have hidden problems.

Thought drywall might work outside if you sealed it up tight. Your story about the client's planter box totally changed my mind. Water always finds a way in and then the whole thing falls apart. Pinterest makes everything look easy without showing the real problems. Using wood for outdoor stuff just seems obvious now.

Sealant always fails eventually, even the expensive stuff. If you really want that look, use fake stone or pressure-treated wood with cement board.
