PSA: Check your cutterhead teeth before every shift

Skipped a 15-minute inspection last Tuesday on a 24-inch cutter suction dredge in Mobile Bay and ended up snapping two teeth off within 3 hours. Has anyone else had a quick overlook turn into a half-day repair?

You said 'the teeth are tiny but they take a beating.' Thing is, cutterhead teeth on a 24-inch dredge aren't actually tiny. They're about 6 inches long and weigh a couple pounds each. Especially the ones on a cutter suction running in Mobile Bay sand. I've pulled busted teeth off before that were chipped down to nubs in under an hour. And it's not always vibration you feel first. Sometimes it's just a weird sound or the pump pressure dropping. The 15-minute check is worth it for spotting a cracked tooth before it snaps clean off.

Gotta admit, I used to blow off those quick checks too (figured I knew my machine well enough to skip a 15-minute walkaround). But after pulling a 14-hour day replacing teeth on a 20-inch dredge in the Gulf, I get it now. That whole "it'll be fine" attitude cost me a shift and a lot of yelling from the foreman. The teeth are tiny but they take a beating, and one loose or worn one can take out two or three others before you even feel the vibration change. Now I treat those inspections like coffee breaks - non-negotiable even if it feels pointless. Sucks learning the hard way, but at least you caught it before losing a whole day.
