Appreciation post: My kitchen backsplash project from last month took a weird turn

I was tiling my kitchen backsplash and ran out of the special adhesive. My husband said, 'Just use some toothpaste, it's sticky!' as a joke, but I was too tired to go to the store. I actually tried a little bit on one tile as a test. It held for about two hours before the tile slid right off and left a minty fresh streak on the wall. Has anyone else had a DIY shortcut idea backfire in a silly way?

Oh man, that's actually hilarious. I used to be the queen of weird DIY fixes and thought anything sticky would work in a pinch. Your toothpaste story is the perfect proof that some shortcuts just aren't worth it. I learned my lesson trying to use chewing gum to fix a wobbly table leg once.

Right, the chewing gum table leg is such a perfect example of that sticky trap. It feels solid for like five minutes until it gets warm and then everything goes wrong. @the_grace, your story makes me remember trying to use candle wax as a temporary fix for a squeaky door hinge. It worked until it melted and dripped everywhere, making a huge mess. We get so focused on using whatever is right in front of us that we forget why real glue or putty exists. Those quick fixes always seem to fail at the worst possible time, too.

Your minty fresh wall sounds like a classic case of DIY desperation.
