Went from booking hostels last minute to scheduling 2 months ahead after one night in Barcelona

Used to just show up in a city and find a bed on Hostelworld that same day. Then I landed in Barcelona last August during La Mercè festival and paid $85 for a bunk in a 12-bed room with no AC. Now I block out every destination at least 6 weeks early and check local event calendars first. Anyone else learn this the hard way or am I the only one who rolls into chaos?

Damn, that's a rough way to learn.

$85 for a 12 bed bunk sounds like you just got unlucky, not really a life lesson.

Try looking for hostels that don't have the massive 12 bed rooms. Those are the worst for noise and theft. Plenty of places have 4 or 6 bed dorms that are way easier to sleep in and lock your stuff up. Also stuff a padlock in your bag before you go, saves you having to buy a cheap one at reception that breaks after one use.

Had a padlock jam on me in Rome once. Spent an hour with a hacksaw in the lobby.
