A talk with a guy in a Chiang Mai cafe about his 'home base'
He said he rents the same apartment in Lisbon for 6 months a year, even when he's gone, just to have a spot for his books and winter coat. It costs him about $400 a month to keep it empty half the time. Does that kind of setup actually make sense for long-term stability, or is it just paying for peace of mind?

Paying rent on an empty apartment seems wild to me. That's nearly five grand a year just for a closet. For that money, you could ship a box of books and a coat anywhere, or get a nice storage unit and still have cash left for a hotel when you visit. Stability is one thing, but that price tag for a part-time home base feels like a luxury, not a smart money move.
