Used to think custom brushes were a waste of time until I tried making my own.
Now I can't live without them for adding texture.

Totally get that now. Making your own brushes lets you match the exact texture you need. I started by scanning rough paper and tweaking the settings until it felt right. Now I can't imagine going back to the default options for most projects.

Yeah the default brushes always feel a little TOO perfect, you know? Like they never have that grit I'm looking for. Your method of scanning actual paper is SO smart, it makes total sense that would give you a real texture to start with. I messed around with the sliders for ages but never got it quite right until I tried something similar. Once you dial in that perfect feel, it really does change how you work on everything.

Worry you're overthinking the texture thing. Most projects turn out fine with default brushes anyway. Custom tools feel special but rarely make or break actual artwork.
