Just spent 4 hours fixing a simple layer blending issue in Photoshop

I was working on a digital portrait for the showcase this weekend and couldn't figure out why the shadows looked all muddy. Turns out I had the layer set to 'multiply' instead of 'normal' and it took me digging through 20 tutorial videos to spot it. Has anyone else had a simple setting waste hours of their time like that?

Hang on a sec, multiply isn't meant for "emergency use" - it's actually a solid blending mode for adding shadows and depth if you know what you're doing. Most of the time people just stack it without adjusting the opacity or using a mask, which is where the muddiness comes from. The real trick is keeping it at like 20-30% and using a soft brush so you don't lose all your detail.

Multiply should be reserved for emergency use only lol.

Daily use just trains your body to need more and more to get the same effect.
