Got roasted at a gallery opening in Portland for my resolution settings

I was showing a landscape piece at a small gallery in Portland last month when some random guy pointed at my screen and said my canvas was too small for the pixel density. He was right, my 300 DPI was way off for the size I was printing. Now I'm stuck wondering if I should switch to 600 DPI for all my big pieces or if that's overkill. Anyone here had a similar reality check at a show?

Mila's right about upscaling artifacts - someone posted a test on a photography forum showing how 600 DPI can mess with fine details if your source file isn't pristine. Might be worth testing both on a single smaller piece before committing to a whole new workflow.

Got called out at a show myself a few years back and it stung bad but I'm actually glad it happened. I used to think 300 DPI was the sweet spot for everything no questions asked. But after that night I started testing 600 DPI on my bigger prints and honestly the difference is night and day when you get up close. I still use 300 for smaller stuff but for anything over 24 inches I bump it up now.

Watch out for upscaling artifacts at 600 DPI though...
