Overheard a neighbor saying she swaps her mugs every 6 months like clockwork

She said she gets bored of looking at the same cup after a while so she brings old ones here and picks up new ones. I thought I was the only one who did that. Been using a chipped mug from my aunt for 3 years and I cant stand it anymore. Does anyone else rotate their kitchen stuff this often or am I just weird?

Oh totally, the "get bored of looking at the same cup" thing is SO real. I do the exact same with my coffee mugs, I swap them out like every four or five months because I just can't stand seeing the same one every single morning. I have this whole system now where I donate the old ones to the local thrift store and pick up a couple new ones from Target or wherever. Even my favorite mug from a trip I took a couple years ago got rotated out after six months because I just needed a fresh look, you know? It's not even about the mug being broken or anything, it's purely about not wanting to stare at the same ceramic face day after day. You're not weird at all, I bet a lot of us do this but just don't talk about it.

Does the six month rule apply to dishes too or am I stuck with my grandma's floral plates forever?

Try picking up a couple of plain mugs in a color you really like, one for coffee and one for tea or whatever. That way you don't get sick of a pattern or image, just swap the color out when you feel like it. I've also had good luck with those ceramic thermal mugs that keep stuff hot longer, they last me way past six months without me wanting to toss them. Your mileage may vary, but a solid color or a textured glaze seems to hold up better to the daily staring.
