Overheard a guy at the park explain why he names his tomato plants

Yesterday I was walking my dog and this older gentleman was tending a small garden plot near the bench. I heard him tell a neighbor, "This one's Gerald, he's a fighter but he needs daily encouragement." He named every single tomato plant and apparently talks to them about the weather and sports scores. He said his harvest went up 40 percent since he started doing it, but I think he just enjoys the company. It made me chuckle because I talk to my houseplants too, but I never gave them names or personalities. Anyone else got a silly little routine that makes zero sense but brings you joy anyway?
