Old GPS collar versus my gut, the dog knew better both times

Back in 2018 I bought one of those fancy tracking collars for my beagle Max, thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but on our third walk it put us 200 yards off the actual trail near the creek. I ignored that thing and just watched his nose, and he found the path home way faster than the little dot on my phone ever did. Has anyone else had a tracker that was more trouble than it was worth, or am I just old school about trusting the dog?

Got a buddy whose fancy GPS collar sent him halfway up a mountain looking for his lab, but the dog was already home waiting by the front door. Turned out the collar's battery died an hour earlier and the app was showing a stale location. He still jokes that the dog's snout is more reliable than any satellite.
