I finally gave up on my flexi leash after the lab dragged me through a mud puddle in Akron last week
Last Tuesday I took my 70 lb lab, Cooper, on the towpath by the canal in Akron and he spotted a goose, so the locking button slipped under my thumb and I went face-first into the mud. I've used that retractable leash for 3 years and told myself the lock was fine, but my elbow still hurts and the goose got away. Does anyone have a solid 6 foot leash they trust, or am I just bad at holding the button?
That "locking button slipped under my thumb" part is the real problem, not you. Those buttons need a hard press at the exact second the dog bolts, and when a lab hits the end of the line your thumb is fighting 70 lbs of sudden pull. A plain 6 foot leash in two hands fixes that, but also think about where the leash attaches. A front clip harness turns Cooper sideways when he lunges instead of letting him put his whole weight into the leash, so even if you fumble, you're not getting yanked off your feet.
