Appreciation post: my neighbor who showed me why password managers matter

Last Tuesday my neighbor Bob came over because his bank account got drained. He had used the same password for everything since 2009. I sat with him for two hours setting up Bitwarden and generating strong passwords for each site. It took him a while to get used to it, but now he says he sleeps better at night. Makes me wonder how many folks still use the same password for email and banking. Has anyone else helped a relative or friend switch to a password manager recently?

Honestly it's wild how many people treat passwords like a minor inconvenience until their bank account gets cleaned out. I know a guy who used "ilovecats" for literally everything including his work email and online banking. Took him getting locked out of his own accounts for three days before he finally let me set him up with a password manager. Bitwarden is solid and free which makes it easy to recommend to anyone.

Oh man, how many of us still have that one friend using "password123" without a care in the world? It is wild how one bad day can really make someone change their whole setup. Bob sounds like he got lucky having you around to help him before something even worse happened. I think most folks just don't realize how easy it is for hackers to guess those old reused passwords until it actually hits them in the wallet. Bitwarden is solid, I use it myself and it just works without being too complicated.

Actually, @dianaanderson, I'm not sure forcing someone into a password manager is always the answer. Some folks have been using the same passwords for years and never had an issue because they aren't a big target. The real problem is the fearmongering around passwords that makes people feel stupid for what works fine for their daily life.
