Turns out you don't need to soak vintage stamps to remove hinges

Everyone online says to soak stamps to get old hinges off, but I tried it on a cheap 1930s set and the ink bled. Now I just use a dry scalpel blade and lift them slowly - no water, no damage. Anyone else found a simpler method that works better?

Tried the soak method once myself and ruined a perfectly good set of Matson navigation stamps. Scaling them off dry with a sharp blade is the only way to go.

How long did you let them soak before you noticed the damage? I have a feeling most people who swear by dry scraping just haven't hit the right water temp yet. Would be curious to hear the blade brand you use too.
