My character got stuck in a cave so I made him a pet rock

I was writing a fantasy scene where my hero was trapped underground for three days. I had no idea how to fill the time without boring the reader. On a whim, I gave him a smooth river stone that he started talking to, naming it 'Gregor'. By the second page, Gregor had a backstory and opinions on moss. It accidentally became the best part of the chapter. What's the weirdest object you've turned into a major plot point?

Honestly that's a great fix for a boring scene. Weirdest object for me was probably a broken pocket watch. Character found it in a gutter and the whole story ended up being about the dead guy who owned it. Never even got it fixed, just carried it around like a sad trophy.

Used to hate filler scenes, but you and kevin_west changed my mind.

Glad we could help, but honestly Kevin deserves most of the credit. His pocket watch story is way better than my usual stuff.
