A 30 year operator told me to stop watching my load and watch my boom tip, and I keep catching myself cheating on it
Ran a 60 ton for a steel erector in Tacoma two weeks ago and the guy rigging for me has been in the seat since 1991, so when he climbs up and talks I listen. He pointed at my boom tip during a blind pick and asked how many times a shift I actually look up there versus how many times I stare at the load block. Told him honestly maybe once for every ten looks at the load, and he just nodded and said that is why I chase the load instead of placing it. Next pick I forced myself to watch the tip and let the rigger call the load, and the swing came out way smoother than anything I did all day. Now I am second guessing 15 years of habit and wondering how much of my jerky booming was really just me looking in the wrong place. Anybody else had an old hand flip your whole technique upside down with one sentence?
Watching the tip is good advice but I doubt one look spot is the magic fix for 15 years of jerky booming. Old operators love dropping these little zen sayings that sound deep but half of it is just personal style that worked for them. Give it a month before you decide the guy rewired your whole technique.
