Vent: I think string lights are overdone and my sister's apartment in Portland proved it to me
Last weekend I helped my sister move into a 400 square foot place near Hawthorne and she had already hung string lights in every single room before the boxes were even unpacked. Everyone online says those lights make a space cozy but honestly the place felt like a patio, not a living room, and I told her so. We ended up swapping most of them for one $12 warm bulb lamp on the floor by the couch and the room felt ten times calmer. Am I the only one who thinks one soft light beats a whole ceiling of little bulbs?
String lights definitely have their place, but I get what you mean about them taking over a room. We have them on our back porch and they look great out there, all twinkly against the dark. Inside though, a bunch of tiny bulbs just chop up the light and make everything feel busy. A single lamp with a warm bulb gives you one soft pool of light, and that is what actually helps me relax at night.
