Warning: stop putting your monitor right in front of the window
I had my desk facing the window in my Denver apartment for 6 months and kept getting headaches from squinting at the glare until a friend pointed out I could just turn the whole desk 90 degrees and use the wall as a backdrop, which fixed it in about 10 minutes, so now I'm wondering what other obvious setup mistakes am I still missing?
Heard a thing on a podcast about how most people miss the lighting right above their screen too. Overhead lights or a lamp that shines straight down onto the desk can bounce off the glass and cause the same eye strain as window glare, so the fix is to put light behind or beside the monitor instead of over it. The other one that got me was screen height, because if the top of your monitor is above eye level your neck is craned up all day and you don't even notice until it aches. Simple fix there is to raise your chair or lower the screen so the top edge sits at or just under your eyes. Kind of wild how many of these little things stack up and you just get used to feeling bad instead of fixing them.
