The $65 monitor arm I returned after 3 days
Thought a cheap gas spring arm would clean up my desk. It sagged like wet cardboard. The clamp also stripped my cheap wood desk edge. Returned it and went back to my stack of books. That was 2 months ago. Books work fine and cost zero. Anyone else ditch the fancy hardware for simple solutions?

...and honestly the whole thing reminds me of when I tried to buy a fake plant for my office and spent way too long comparing them. Ended up with a real one from the grocery store that my cat keeps knocking over. So yeah, sometimes the simple answer is the right one, even if it's a mess.

I mean, I get the frustration, but I had the opposite experience. My cheap gas spring arm is about a year old now and it holds my 27 inch monitor without sagging at all. Maybe it's just the brand or the weight of your monitor, but I also put a thin piece of rubber between the clamp and my desk so it wouldn't strip anything. Books work for a lot of people, but I like being able to swivel my screen when I'm showing something to someone sitting next to me.
