Buddy from accounting called my desk a 'depressing beige box' and now I can't unsee it

He walked past my cubicle last Thursday and said my setup looks like a DMV waiting room with zero personality. That stung because I thought I had it together with the standard issue monitor stand and a single plant. How do you add warmth to a workspace when your company won't let you change the furniture or paint?

Read somewhere that a textured fabric wall hanging can soften up a space without breaking any office rules.

Got a warm lamp with an orange bulb, makes the whole corner feel less like a prison. Also threw a bandana over one of the filing cabinets for a pop of color. Little stuff like that goes a LONG way.

Actually, I hate to be that person but orange light is more for mood than actual work. If you're trying to read or do anything with fine print, that warm bulb is going to mess with your eyes pretty fast. Something in the soft white range, around 2700K, gives you the cozy feel without making everything look like a cheap Instagram filter. The bandana trick is clever though, I've seen people use scarves or even old ties to wrap around monitor arms or chair backs. Just watch the flame retardant rules if it's near anything that gets hot.
