Saw a crew at a Home Depot parking lot that made me rethink my mix

I was grabbing supplies for a driveway job last Thursday and watched these guys pour a small pad with a 6 bag mix and no plasticizer. They worked it for 20 minutes straight and it came out glassy smooth with zero cracking. Always thought I needed extra water for workability but that convinced me to cut back and rely on finishing time instead. Anyone else had good results with a stiffer mix?
