That $90 cable tester I bought on Amazon was a complete waste of money
Last month I needed a quick cable tester to troubleshoot some drop issues at a client site in Phoenix. I skimped and bought a cheap one for $90 that claimed it could check all the usual things. Well, after spending half a day trying to use it, I found out it kept giving me false positives on bad cables. It ended up costing me way more time than it saved. Has anyone else gotten burned by cheap testers or am I just unlucky?

Got a $10 one off Amazon last week that melted on me. @annaw73 would probably laugh.

Honestly my first thought wasn't even "oh no" it was "yep that tracks for a $10 multimeter." I bought a cheap one once just to test a single light switch and the plastic started getting soft while I was still holding it. Learned my lesson the hard way too. There's something about seeing smoke coming from your meter that really makes you reconsider your life choices. At least you got a funny story out of it right?
