Heard a tech at a Denver repair shop say "never trust the customer's story, trust the SMART data" and now I run it on every ticket
So last month I was dropping off a dead laptop at a shop over on Broadway in Denver and I overheard one of their guys tell a new hire something that stopped me in my tracks. He said the customer will always say "it just stopped working" or "I barely touched it" but the drive's SMART data and the event logs tell a totally different story. I started pulling SMART on every machine that comes through my bench since then, and out of maybe 40 tickets I found 3 drives that were throwing reallocated sector warnings the owners had no idea about. One lady swore her PC was fine, just slow, and her drive was already at 1,204 reallocated sectors. I cloned it that same day and her face when I showed her the chart was worth the ten minutes it took to run. It has changed how I write up estimates too because now I have hard numbers instead of just guessing from symptoms. Any of you running SMART checks on every single intake, or do you only bother when the drive is already acting up?
