The bus was packed so I decided to walk the last mile
My usual bus was so full this morning that people were pressed against the doors. I had a choice: stay crammed in for the last mile or get off and walk. I got off at 8th Street, figuring the fresh air would be better. It took me 22 minutes, which is only five minutes longer than the bus would have taken with all the stops. My feet are a bit sore now, but at least I didn't have some guy's backpack in my face the whole time. Anyone else ever bail on a crowded bus and just finish the trip on foot?

Ever notice how walking that last bit can actually make you feel more awake when you get to work? I started doing it a few times a week, and now I plan for it. I leave a pair of decent shoes at my desk just for that walk from the earlier stop. It turns a frustrating part of the day into a little quiet time, and I'm never late because I'm not stuck in traffic anymore.

Last winter my bus was so full the driver couldn't even close the doors. I got off at the park on Main and walked the rest, about a mile and a half. It was cold but so much better than being stuck. I made it home in almost the same time because the bus gets stuck in traffic. Now I just get off and walk if it looks bad. The extra few minutes are worth it to not feel like a canned sardine.
