Unpopular opinion: Simple pool laps build better dive stamina than fancy workouts

Back in my early days, we just swam laps to get ready for a job. Now with all the gym stuff, I find my old swim routine kept me in better shape underwater. What's your take on keeping fitness basic for this work?

Wait, you trained for diving without any dry land workouts at all? Most divers I know are glued to their gym routines now. That old school method seems too basic to work, but maybe they're overcomplicating things.

My first coach at the local YMCA pool drilled us on water entries every day. We didn't touch weights, just focused on form and control in the actual dive tank. That built a sense of balance you can't get from lifting alone. Why add gym time if it doesn't translate directly to the board? Sometimes keeping it simple lets you master the basics faster. I saw divers improve more from extra pool sessions than any dry land workout.

Notice how everyone argues about gym vs pool time but ignores injury rates. Pushing weights can mess up your joint stability if you're not careful, while all that water entry practice builds control that prevents spills. But yeah, some divers need strength to handle the impact from higher boards. The real trick is balancing both without getting dogmatic about either side. Keeping it simple works until your body demands more support. We're not robots, so why train like one?
