Just dropped $50 on a variant cover that was supposed to be rare and it's basically a common

Bought a 'limited print run' Spider-Man variant from a booth at my local con last weekend for fifty bucks only to find out the site I checked was wrong and it's worth like three dollars, anyone else ever get burned by trusting a seller's hype?

Hang on, before you beat yourself up too much, ask yourself if you actually liked the cover before you knew the price. I've been collecting for a while and I've learned that the "value" of a book only matters if you're planning to flip it right away. If you bought it because you thought it looked cool and the seller was hyping it, you still got a cool cover for your collection, right? The real burn is when you spend money on something you don't even like just because someone told you it's rare. Take it from someone who's been there, the hype almost never matches the reality in this hobby.

Wait, is that really how you look at it? I used to think the whole point was finding deals and stuff that might go up in value later, but you've got a solid point. I've got a couple of books sitting on my shelf I paid way too much for just because everyone was talking about them, and honestly I don't even like the covers that much. The ones I actually grabbed because they looked awesome, even if I overpaid a little, I still smile when I see them. So yeah, you changed my mind on this one.
