I drove to a big convention and my booking was not in their system. Had to scramble for a last minute room that cost way too much. My cousin paid $350 a night for a basic hotel in Chicago because he booked 48 hours out. The real trick is to search for hotels near the airport, not downtown. They often have way more rooms and lower prices when everything else is sold out. I saved almost half by staying by O'Hare and taking the train into the city.
