A stranger at the corner table asked about my notebook, and now I'm rethinking 15 years of journaling habits
Last Tuesday I was at Blue Bottle on 4th Street, scribbling my usual morning pages, when this older guy gestured at my notebook and said 'you write down the same stuff every day, dont you?' He was right, I've filled 12 of the same Moleskines since 2010 with identical entries about coffee prices, weather, and errands. He showed me his pocket calendar, just one word per day, like 'bridge' or 'sick dog', and said the trick is remembering what mattered, not what happened. That hit different because I've been recording volume, not meaning, for over a decade. I'm trying his method this week, and honestly it feels lighter, but I keep wondering if I'm losing the color of my days. Has anyone else dumped their long-form habit for something shorter and felt both free and weirdly guilty?
