A barista in Denver told me her shop tosses 40 pounds of used grounds every week, and now I can't stop thinking about it
I was at a spot on South Broadway grabbing a cold brew when she said that number while dumping the bin, and I just stood there doing the math in my head. I already take grounds home for my compost, but 40 pounds from ONE shop seems like way more than any garden can use. Does anyone know if local farms or community gardens actually want this stuff, or am I about to become the weirdo calling around asking for buckets?
40 pounds a week from one shop on South Broadway definitely adds up, but farms around here can actually take a lot of it. My cousin runs a small veg farm out near Longmont and she takes grounds from two cafes, she mixes them into her compost pile and uses the whole thing on about an acre. The catch is most farms already have their own setup and hauling wet grounds around is a pain, so a lot of them say no. Community gardens are usually easier to work with, the one off 32nd takes buckets if you drop them yourself. So yeah you might be the weirdo making calls, but that's how the good connections get made anyway.
