Vent: found out my grinder holds almost a gram of old coffee and I feel gross
I was poking around a coffee forum last Tuesday and read that a typical burr grinder traps close to a gram of stale grounds in the chute and around the burrs, which is basically a whole shot of old coffee getting mixed into every fresh dose. I pulled the top off mine for the first time in about 7 months and scraped out a dark little clump that smelled like a basement, and now I can't stop thinking about how many cups I ruined. How often are you all actually taking yours apart to brush it out, or am I the last one to know about this?
Picturing you scraping out that little basement-smelling clump like you just found buried treasure is killing me. Honestly you're not the last to know, most of us just live in denial because taking the burrs out is a whole project. In my experience a quick brush every couple weeks keeps it from getting that bad, but your mileage may vary depending on the grinder. Seven months is a solid run though, so at least you got your money's worth of mystery flavor.
