Tool coating science finally clicked after a job in Phoenix

Used to think TiAlN was marketing fluff until I ran 500 parts of 4140 at 275 sfm and saw triple tool life over uncoated. Anyone else ignore the coating specs until a hot situation proves them right?

...but the real trick is that coatings only help if you got the chip load right. I seen guys blame the coating when they were actually just burning up the edge because their speeds and feeds were off. That Phoenix heat probably forced you to slow down and think about the cut, not just slap a fancy coating on and hope. And 500 parts at 275 sfm on 4140, that's a solid number, but I'd bet uncoated would've surprised you too if you ran it cooler and slower. So yeah, coatings matter, but they're not magic, they just make a good setup last longer.
