Heard a shop foreman say something about tool offsets that stuck with me
I was grabbing stock from the rack at Apex Machining last Friday and overheard the foreman tell a new guy that using the same offset for roughing and finishing is why his parts were out by .003. Made me think about how many times I've rushed setup and done the same thing without catching it. Any of you guys run separate offsets for rough and finish passes?

That ".003" could just as easily be from tool deflection or material shift, not the offset. Sounds more like a scapegoat than a real fix.

Honestly, I gotta push back a little here @emery_black. Tool deflection and material shift are real things, sure, but they usually show up in a pattern, not as a clean .003 offset on just one feature. If it was a one-off wobble, you'd see it on more than just that single dimension. I've seen plenty of guys chase ghosts blaming the machine when the offset was staring them in the face the whole time. Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one.
